Lesser Appellations

The less prominent appellations of Bordeaux are certainly worth knowing about, as wines to rival some of the best in Bordeaux can be picked up at a fraction of the price.

Just west of Pomerol are Fronsac and Canon-Fronsac. There are some lovely wines here. Our recommendations: la Riviere, la Vieille Cure (Fronsac), Canon, Canon de Brem (Canon-Fronsac).

Further north are the Premières Côtes de Blaye and the Côtes de Bourg, producing mostly red wines. To the east of St-Emilion are the Côtes de Castillon and the Côtes de Francs, both potentially good hunting grounds for a bargain. On the east bank of the Garonne, the Premières Côtes de Bordeaux is better known for sweet wines, but it also produces dry wines of all colours. Between the Dordogne and the Garonne is the Entre-Deux-Mers, a large appellation producing swathes of white wine. Basic Bordeaux may also be sold as Bordeaux or Bordeaux Supérieur. Our recommendations: Parenchère, Côte de Montpezat (both Côtes de Castillon), Carignan (Premières Côtes de Bordeaux).

At BWC Management & Consulting Partners we believe trading wine should be both enjoyable and profitable, but like any traded commodity there are risks and wine can go down in value as well as up.
